VOLUNTEERING

It's a fact that SUUSI is run completely by volunteers. Even the SUUSI “staff” and workshop leaders are compensated only in credits that are applied to the cost of attending SUUSI, and many, many people volunteer their time outside of staff positions to make the SUUSI magic happen! If you’ve started your registration, you might have noticed that you can now sign yourself up for Volunteer jobs during registration just like you sign up for workshops or nature trips (this is new for 2025). Please find some time(s) that work for you to sign up to help out! It’s fun, is a great way to meet new people, and a great way to get more integrated into the SUUSI community (especially for newcomers). Our Volunteer Coordinator is working on fun ways to recognize members of our community that volunteer the most hours this SUUSI. More volunteer jobs will become available as registration progresses, so even when you finish, keep checking back.

If you have any questions, reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteers@suusi.org

SUUSI SURVEY RESULTS

As you may know, the SUUSI Board asks for participant feedback in a survey at the end of each SUUSI. It’s been decided that it would be a good idea to publicize the results from SUUSI 2024, and we have also added strategic responses to each of the major issues/suggestions that were identified. The survey with those responses can be found at https://www.suusi.org/survey

Youth Protection and Background Checks

One of our most important values and goals at SUUSI is to provide a safe environment for everyone. As part of that, SUUSI and Radford have policies that require adults supervising minors to get criminal and sex offender background checks and complete Radford’s "Title IX" (sexual Harassment) and "Minors on Campus" trainings. This includes anyone working or volunteering with the Nursery, Youth, Middler, Teen or TWOB programs; adults staying in the Childcare Co-op; and volunteers driving Star Cars. SUUSI is required to submit a list of all of these adults and the results of those checks to our host, so it is essential that everyone in one of these positions register by the end of the early bird discount on May 15. We recognize that individuals may have criminal records for various reasons. While a criminal record does not prevent participation in SUUSI or participation on staff, it may influence the types of roles available. If you have any questions, reach out to our Risk Manager at risk@suusi.org

Nature is Looking for New Leadership

Do you love the Nature trips you've taken over the years? Do you have an appetite for organizing fun new things to try? Do you like to lead your friends in those adventures? The current Nature Co-directors do, too, but they've been doing this at SUUSI for several years and don't want to hog all the glory! And there's something to be said for the fresh ideas and perspective that new leadership can bring.

If you are interested in heading up the Nature Department in 2026--and maybe beyond--or know someone you think may be great, please email nature@suusi.org or director@suusi.org to let us know. Feel free to ask any questions you may have; we want to see Nature continue to be a part of what SUUSI offers, and we’ll be glad to answer anything!

Refrigerators at SUUSI

Access to the fridges in dorm lounges is somewhat limited. While most dorm floors have a kitchen with a refrigerator in them, there is typically only one per floor, and some floors have none. If you really need a refrigerator for the week, it is recommended that you bring a mini-fridge. We are allowed to have one in our dorm room as long as it does not draw more than 2 amps, and most 1.6 to 3.2 cu ft mini-fridges draw less than that.

Note that due to fire codes, appliances that cook or heat are prohibited in dorm rooms including but not limited to: toasters, toaster ovens, microwaves, slow cookers, hot air popcorn poppers, hot plates, waffle irons, rice cookers, Foreman grills, air fryers & broilers. You are allowed to use small kitchen appliances such as toasters, slow cookers, and rice cookers in the dorm kitchens (just not in your dorm room!)

Please contact access@suusi.org if additional accommodations are needed.

Help Us Spread the SUUSI Love

Happy registration time to all who are celebrating! We would love your help getting the word out. If you’re already planning to come to SUUSI, we invite you to reach out to your circles—your congregation, friends, email groups, and beyond. Personal invites make a big difference!

To make it easy, we’ve got a media kit ready for you, including a copy-and-pasteable message below you can share. Don’t forget to connect with us and share on social media—links are in the NUUS footer! Reach out to outreach@suusi.org for the media kit, and if you have any questions!

Thanks for being part of what makes SUUSI so special.

Subject: Come to SUUSI with me this summer!

Dear friend,

If you know me, you know how much I love SUUSI—the Southeast Unitarian Universalist Summer Institute. It’s a weeklong gathering of open-hearted, open-minded people celebrating community, creativity, and joy.

SUUSI is for all ages, races, identities, singles, families—everyone. Whether you’re into nature, deep conversation, art, music, games, or worship, there’s something here for you. It’s a truly welcoming, multigenerational adventure where connection and inclusion are at the heart of it all.

This year’s SUUSI is happening July 20–26, 2025 at Radford University in Radford, Virginia, nestled in the Blue Ridge foothills. It’s been a source of amazing friendships, growth, and unforgettable fun for me—and I’d love for you to experience it too.

Registration is open now: https://solis.suusi.org/ - and May 15 is our early bird special deadline!

Curious? I’d be happy to chat, or you can reach the SUUSI team directly at info@suusi.org.

Hope to see you there!
